pré-impressão
Definition and Scope
The journal Ciencia y Filosofía recognizes the deposit and dissemination of preprints (versions of manuscripts prior to peer review) as a legitimate and valuable practice within the open science ecosystem. This policy aims to foster the rapid dissemination of knowledge, increase the visibility of research results, and promote early academic dialogue, without compromising the integrity of the peer review process or copyright.
A preprint is defined as the initial version of a manuscript that has been submitted to the journal but has not yet undergone peer review, copyediting, editing, or formatting. This version may be deposited by authors in preprint repositories, institutional repositories, or subject-specific repositories (such as arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, SocArXiv, Zenodo, etc.) before, during, or after submission to the journal.
Guiding Principles
This policy is based on the following principles:
Principle
Description
Open Access
Knowledge should be freely and promptly available to all of society.
Speed in Scientific Communication
Preprints accelerate the exchange of findings, especially in rapidly evolving fields.
Transparency
It must be clearly stated that the preprint has not been peer-reviewed or certified by the journal.
No Duplication
| The publication of a preprint does not constitute prior publication that would preclude consideration of the manuscript.
Academic Integrity
Authors are responsible for the content of the preprint and for not submitting versions that contain serious errors, falsified data, or plagiarism.
Conditions for Submitting Preprints
Authors wishing to submit a preprint of their manuscript must comply with the following conditions:
3.1. Permitted Version
- Submission of the version sent to the journal (preprint) is permitted before, during, or after the peer-review process.
- Submission of the final accepted version (post-print) or the published version (formatted PDF) as a pre-print is not permitted.
3.2. Authorized Repositories
Authors may deposit their pre-prints in:
- Recognized pre-print repositories (arXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, SocArXiv, OSF Preprints, etc.)
- Institutional repositories (e.g., Institutional Repository of [Institution])
- Subject-specific repositories (e.g., Zenodo, HAL, SSRN)
- Open science platforms (e.g., GitHub, Figshare, ResearchGate – for non-commercial purposes)
3.3. Mandatory Declarations
In the deposited pre-print, authors must visibly include:
The following statement:
> This manuscript is a pre-print submitted to the journal [Journal Name] ([ISSN]). It has not yet been peer-reviewed or certified by the journal. Therefore, it should not be used for clinical purposes, decision-making, or as a final version. This work should be cited as a 'preliminary version'.
The DOI or persistent identifier assigned by the repository.
The publication license (preferably Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International – CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
The authors' full names and affiliations, as well as their ORCID identifiers.
3.4. Relationship to Submission to the Journal
- Authors may deposit the preprint before, during, or after submission to the journal.
- Prior authorization from the editorial committee is not required to deposit a preprint.
- Authors are advised to update the deposited preprint with the accepted version (postprint) only after the article has been published by the journal, adding the corresponding caption and a link to the final version.
Peer Review Process and Preprints
4.1. Confidentiality
Reviewers and editors agree not to search for, read, or cite preprints of Manuscripts that are actively being evaluated, unless the author has explicitly made this public and it does not compromise the confidentiality of the process.
4.2. Citing Preprints
Authors may cite preprints from other researchers in their manuscripts, provided that:
- It is clearly identified as a preprint (without peer review).
- The DOI or stable URL is included.
- The copyright and license of the preprint are respected.
Recommended citation format (APA 7th edition):
> Last Name, First Initial. (Year). Title of the work (preprint) [Preprint]. Repository. DOI or URL
4.3. Conflicts with Anonymity
In double-blind peer review processes (such as the one used by this journal), authors must anonymize their preprint (removing names, affiliations, and any other information that could reveal their identity) when submitting it for review, even if they have already deposited a previous version.
5. Relationship with the final publication
Once the article has been accepted and published in its final version in the journal, the authors may:
1. Update the deposited preprint, replacing it with the postprint (accepted version, without final journal layout) or adding a link to the published version.
2. Add the following update note:
> This article has been accepted for publication in [Journal Name], ISSN [XXXX-XXXX]. The final version is available at: [DOI or URL of the journal].
3. Deposit the published version (formatted PDF) only if the journal operates under a license that allows it (e.g., CC BY, CC BY-NC-SA) and provided that the original source is cited. Under no circumstances will the deposit of the formatted version of the journal (PDF with typography, logos, and editorial design) be permitted without the express consent of the journal, unless the journal is a Diamond open access journal and this is included in its policies.
6. Authors' Responsibilities
Authors agree to:
- Not deposit a preprint containing serious errors, false data, plagiarism, or scientific misconduct.
- Keep the deposited preprint updated (if possible) with the accepted version and the link to the final publication.
- Inform the journal of the deposit of the preprint, indicating the URL or DOI of the repository.
- Not withdraw the preprint after the review process has begun, except for justified reasons (e.g., detection of a serious error, misconduct).
- Accept that the preprint will not be considered a “pre-publication” that disqualifies the manuscript from being evaluated by the journal.
7. Journal Responsibilities
The journal commits to:
- Not penalizing authors for submitting a preprint.
- Reviewing the manuscript without bias arising from knowledge of the existence of a preprint.
- Maintaining confidentiality during the review process, regardless of the existence of a preprint.
- Allowing authors to update the preprint after publication.
- Including a note referencing the preprint in the final publication (if requested by the authors and if the platform allows it).
8. Licenses and Copyright
- The journal recommends that preprints be submitted under Creative Commons licenses that are compatible with the journal's license (preferably CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
- Authors retain all copyright to their preprint and may transfer or license it as agreed. with the journal.
- The journal assumes no responsibility for the content of preprints deposited in third-party repositories, nor for any misuse thereof.
9. Exceptions and Special Cases
In the following cases, the journal may request that authors not deposit a preprint or that they temporarily withdraw it:
- When the manuscript contains sensitive, unpublished, or patentable data.
- When the manuscript is being considered for publication in a special issue where absolute novelty is a requirement.
- When there is an undeclared conflict of interest that could be affected by early dissemination.
- When the preprint repository does not guarantee long-term preservation or the assignment of a DOI.
In these cases, the editor will make a decision on a case-by-case basis.
10. Sanctions for Non-Compliance
Failure to comply with this policy (e.g., depositing an unauthorized version, lack of an information caption, incorrect update) will be considered a minor breach of editorial policies. Depending on the severity, the journal may:
- Warn the author.
- Request the correction of the preprint deposited.
- Withdraw the manuscript from the review process.
- Include a note in the final publication (if it has already been published).
In serious cases (e.g., depositing the formatted version without permission, plagiarism), the sanctions established in the journal's Code of Ethics will be applied, which may include a ban on publishing in the journal for a specified period.
11. Validity and Review
This policy is effective upon its publication on the journal's website and will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with international open science standards and the recommendations of COPE, DOAJ, SciELO, and the SNPCyH.
Authors will be notified of any significant changes through the website and the journal's usual communication channels.
